About Livestream No. 002

LIVE From The BEATBOX - Livestream No. 002 was originally presented on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 4pm CST. It featured Guest Artist Yunina Barbour-Payne and a post-performance Q&A led by Moderator, poet-scholar Dominique Garrett-ScottPortions of Livestream No. 002 utilize pieces of media not original to the presenting artist(s). These items have been curated and are presented in the type of "found footage"/ "found audio" format typical of mixtapes. Each piece of media is attributed to its creator in the list of citations below.

"Livestream No. 002 is shaping up to be a meditation on Black culture (and some aspects of American culture more broadly) of the late 1970s, the 1980s, and early 1990s... A meditation through which I am investigating how sounds and imagery/ images of youth, beauty, joy, and escape from these three eras talk to and reference each other... how they move forward and backwards through each other. I’m interested in how visions of the future and recollections of the past have maybe changed or stayed the same throughout these eras. I’m interested in the idea of conjuring the strength, power, and promise (and maybe even the actual presence) of some of our beloved icons. I’m also interested in celebrating the resilience of Black folks and how this sort of energy (Savion Glover and George C. Wolfe called it “da beat”) continues to be sustained through the theorizing and imagining Black folks do though creativity, art, and popular media.... which often involves evoking the past and hoping for a better future for ourselves and those we love.⁣⁣"

Process Draft 002

"Process drafts" are bits of Love's personal rehearsal footage from his time spent at The BEATBOX preparing for each livestream performance. These clips are untreated—the audio is raw and unmixed and there is minimal "post" work. This footage shows how Love experiments with lighting, a/v setup, and the composition of the space. Love also records himself to take note of choreographic ideas. Ultimately, "process drafts" provide insight into how Love develops his work.

Livestream Recording 002

Livestream No. 002 took place on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 4pm CST. It included four auralvisual tracks:

"CHECKPOINT!," "AND, THE STEPS KEEP COMING...," "BLACK FAITH STILL CAN'T BE WASHED AWAY.," and "REVISITING 'THE PARTY' (featuring Yunina Barbour-Payne)."

*Please note: The artist experienced technical difficulty with the live sound mix during the live presentation of the piece.

Livestream No. 002 was approximately 50 minutes in length and included a post-performance Q&A led by poet-scholar Dominique Garrett-Scott.

Revised Draft

Usually, Love prepares "Revised Drafts" to catalog further developed versions of the material from the initial livestream. Though the artist experienced technical difficulties with the live sound mix during the initial presentation, he has decided to let the livestream stand as the sole record of the full piece.
