About Livestream No. 005

Livestream No. 005 Cover (1).png

LIVE From The BEATBOX—Livestream No. 005 was presented on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 4pm Central Standard Time. To mark the culmination of Love's time as a GFT In Residence artist, Livestream No. 005 was streamed outdoors at Ground Floor Theatre in East Austin, TX.

Portions of Livestream No. 005 utilize pieces of media not original to the presenting artist(s). These items have been curated and are presented in the type of "found footage"/ "found audio" format typical of mixtapes. Each piece of media is attributed to its creator in the list of citations below.

"With Livestream No. 005, I extend the narrative and theoretical arc of Livestream No. 004 and return to 'rhythm-dreaming' of a future time, space, and place of uninhibited Black queer possibility. I reimagine portions of the lobby and exterior space surrounding Ground Floor Theatre as the outer reaches of a utopic futuristic location and I curate a soundtrack anchored by house and electronic music to underscore my improvisation on top of a range of different types of surfaces. I will spend Livestream No. 005 under the East Austin sky, tracing my movements and percussive sounds through/ over sand, soil, wood, and pavement to continue conjuring my own vision of a Black 'elsewhere.'”

Livestream No. 005 opened with the sharing of the following message:  "The news coming out of Atlanta, GA this week is harrowing. Once again, white supremacist terrorism has claimed lives and destroyed families and communities. In the wake of the rise of racist (and in the case of Tuesday’s shooting, misogynist) violence against Asian Americans, none of us have the luxury of remaining silent or complacent. This evening’s program is involved in an embodied Afrofuturist imagining of a time and space of Black possibility. In the spirit of the type of community organizing that struggles for Black and Asian freedom in solidarity, Livestream No. 005 is about identifying methods for envisioning a future where we may all finally be free from the grip of white supremacy."

Livestream No. 005 Guest Artists and Collaborators

Deja Morgan

Voice Acting

Deja Morgan is a theatre-maker, performance artist, and writer who was born and raised in Texas and currently resides in Philadelphia, PA. She is inspired by the legacies and work of figures such as Octavia E. Butler, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Alexis Pauline Gumbs and is focused on creating Afro-futurist worlds that nurture Black ancestral connection and uninhibited dreaming. Deja is also intimately invested in issues surrounding food sovereignty, farming, and cooking, interests which inform much of her artistic work. As Venus is the ruler of Deja's astrological chart (she is a Pisces sun, Cancer moon, and Libra rising, to be exact) dreaming, loving, and connection with others comes naturally—just a few of the many gifts she intends to offer back to the world.

Process Draft 005

"Process drafts" are bits of Love's personal rehearsal footage from his time spent at The BEATBOX preparing for each livestream performance. These clips are untreated—the audio is raw and unmixed and there is minimal "post" work. This footage shows how Love experiments with lighting, a/v setup, and the composition of the space. Love also records himself to take note of choreographic ideas. Ultimately, "process drafts" provide insight into how Love develops his work.

Livestream Recording 005

Livestream No. 005 took place on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 4pm CST. It included one auralvisual "track" designed to continue the narrative of Livestream No. 004 and illustrate the arrival of a futuristic commercial airline-like aircraft to a new "elsewhere" capable of fully supporting Black queerness.

Livestream No. 005 was approximately 60 minutes in length.

The copy of the livestream available here in the Livestream No. 005 Library has been edited so that unaltered footage of the performance lives with the video content shared by the artist during the stream.
