About Livestream No. 001

LIVE From The BEATBOX - Livestream No. 001 was originally presented on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at 4pm CST. It featured guest artist Kaitlyn B. Jones. A post-performance Q&A was led by writer and curator Jamal Batts. Portions of Livestream No. 001 utilize pieces of media not original to the presenting artist(s). These items have been curated and are presented in the type of "found footage"/ "found audio" format typical of mixtapes. Each piece of media is attributed to its creator in the list of citations below.

Kaitlyn B. Jones is an interdisciplinary scholartist and activist based in Houston, Texas. She believes that movement and performance are conduits for healing and activism. Her work aims to facilitate conversations about intersectionality, social justice, and the complex Black-American experience. She holds a B.F.A. in Dance from The University of Texas at Austin and is a M.A. in Arts Leadership candidate at the University of Houston. Kaitlyn and Michael J. Love previously collaborated in 2018 and 2019 on “The AURALVISUAL MIXTAPE Collection, Part II: DOPE FIT!”⁣

Process Draft

"Process drafts" are bits of Love's personal rehearsal footage from his time spent at The BEATBOX preparing for each livestream performance. These clips are untreated—the audio is raw and unmixed and there is minimal "post" work. This footage shows how Love experiments with lighting, a/v setup, and the composition of the space. Love also records himself to take note of choreographic ideas. Ultimately, "process drafts" provide insight into how Love develops his work.

Livestream Recording

Livestream No. 001 took place on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at 4pm CST. It included six auralvisual tracks: SEA, BLACK VOCAL PROTEST I ("ASININE"), BLACK VOCAL PROTEST II ("READ FOR FILTH"), BLACK EMBODIED PROTEST, SKY I, and SKY II (ft. Kaitlyn B. Jones)*.

*"SKY II (ft. Kaitlyn B. Jones)" is not included on this recording due to issues with internet connection during the live performance. Please view the Revised Draft of Livestream No. 001 to see this additional material.

Livestream No. 001 was approximately 38 minutes in length and included a post-performance Q&A led by writer and curator Jamal Batts.

Revised Draft

The revised draft of LIVE From The BEATBOX - Livestream No. 001 catalogs further developed versions of the material from the initial livestream. The artist(s) present their work here outside of the consequential circumstances of live performance and are able to enjoy new discoveries due to more control over technology and design.

The Revised Draft includes the full Livestream No. 001 program: SEA, BLACK VOCAL PROTEST I ("ASININE") and BLACK VOCAL PROTEST II ("READ FOR FILTH"), BLACK EMBODIED PROTEST, SKY I, SKY II (ft. Kaitlyn B. Jones).
